5 & 6 Star Energy Rating Service

What is an Energy Rating.

5 & 6 star energy rating

Basically, an Energy Rating is a calculation of the thermal performance of a building given as a points score together with a star rating from zero to 5 or 6 stars.

In Victoria the main method used for performing energy ratings is with the FirstRate house energy rating software developed by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Victoria and the C.S.I.R.O.
It can be used for a wide range of housing types - from detached houses to high rise dwellings. FirstRate includes all climate zones within Victoria and is recognised as a house energy rating tool under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme.

Detailed information about the building is entered into the program. This information includes the materials used for construction, i.e. brick veneer; concrete slab; internal thermal mass etc.
Wall, window and floor areas and the buildings orientation is included.
Window frame types; glazing; eave widths; sunlight obstruction from neighbouring buildings, courtyards, fences; the extent and type of floor coverings are further items.

For a more detailed list see 'Overview of details assessed'

There are 3 types of ratings that are supplied by AusDesign.
  • An initial rating undertaken at the design stage to assess the design and make recommendations if necessary to increase the rating score to required levels. i.e. increasing ceiling insulation levels etc.
  • A rating undertaken on an established design for a Planning Permit application.
  • A rating undertaken on an established design for a Building Permit application.

As part of our energy rating service we will undertake an initial rating, once your Architect or Building Designer has finalised your desired layout, to check that the design is capable of achieving a 5 Star Energy Rating.
We will make any necessary recommendations and then once the plans are modified [if required] we will finalise the rating.
Our fixed fee covers the total procedure.
Depending upon several factors including site orientation, window location etc it may in some circumstances not be possible to raise a particular design to a 5 Star level without major changes
