The goal of reopening the Pool as an assett for all in the Community has been achieved .

After many months of planning and hard work by the Community Management Committee the pool is now open, with the initial opening days receiving keen interest from both local swimmers and visitors from the Latrobe Valley and surrounding towns. The availibilty of a fully supervised heated indoor area with protection from the sun and weather conditions year round is being well supported by both casual and dedicated swimmers.

Over the coming months, the opening days and times may be varied as the management committee fully determines the requirements of the community.
Currently the demand has been for general swimming on Sundays and Public holidays and this will form the basis for the pools opening hours with additional days to be included as the demand is shown.

Lifesavers.
There is an immediate need is for qualified Lifesavers, without which the pool cannot continue to develop. If you have lifesaving skills or are interested in obtaining a full Life Saving qualification we would like to hear from you.

Volunteers
Extra volunteers are needed to manage the front desk on a rostered basis. If you have a few hours available each month to work with others in helping with the running of the pool contact any of the committee members or phone the pool on 5194 2284. Your support will assist the community.

Heating Update
After an initial setback with the quality of the heating oil required in the new boiler, replacement oil has been purchased and the pool temperature is now being regulated at a very comfortable 27 degrees.

The Pool complex has been undergoing a major revitalisation of the facilities with new carparking areas, wheelchair access, repainting, landscaping and upgrading of the pool heating system being carried out under the direction of a community management committee.
The support from members of the community volunteering their time and expertise to assist in the reopening of the pool has been invaluable, and a special thanks goes to all

The second 'Work for the Dole' programme, initiated by the Committee to carry out the works and to teach new skills to participants, is nearing completion and the focus is now shifting to enlisting volunteer help for the day to day operating of the pool.

Background on the Pool Project
Responding to community enquiries about the Willung South Pool complex, early in 2004 an interim management committee was set up to look into the viability and possibility of reopening the pool under community management.
In June 2004 a public meeting was held to inform the public of progress so far. There was unanimous support to proceed further with plans to reopen the pool and a broader committee was formed to carry that work forward.

The committee has worked hard to develop plans so that a final proposal is ready to be put forward to the community for endorsement.
Wellington Shire Council has committed support for the project with a discretionary grant to help with training in conjunction with a 'work for the dole' project pending satisfactory lease and insurance agreements.
The committee has determined that the forming of a 'swimming club' will be the best way forward with regard to insurance, community service and raising capital to pay insurance premiums. Occasional users and those not wishing to become members will have access to the pool through signing in as day members. Membership will begin upon the opening of the pool and a range of packages will be available. It is hoped that a majority of memberships will be purchased prior to opening so that funds can be raised to cover insurance costs upfront.

A public meeting held on 13th December at the Gormandale Hall was called to obtain public endorsement on the reopening of the pool under the proposed format and to seek expressions of interest in registration for membership and for volunteers.
